Sponsorship issues force LPGA to cut 3 events
The LPGA Tour is expected to announce it will drop two to three events and $4 million to $5 million in prize money from its 2009 schedule amid the nation's economic downturn, the New York Times reported Wednesday.
LPGA commissioner Carolyn Bivens said events that will be taken off next year's schedule include the $1.8 million SemGroup Championship and the $2.6 million Ginn Tribute hosted by Annika Sorenstam.

Ballesteros out of ICU, will stay in hospital
Five-time major winner Seve Ballesteros was released from intensive care on Tuesday following brain surgery on a malignant tumor.
Madrid's La Paz hospital said in a statement that Ballesteros would remain in hospital "to continue his rehabilitation" following three surgeries in 18 days.
It remained cautious over releasing a time frame for his exit after a complicated surgery, saying only that the healing "process is slow" and that Ballesteros would remain in the hospital for some time.

Morse up 1 at Champions Tour Q-school tourney
John Morse shot a 2-over 74 on Thursday at TPC Eagle Trace to take a one-stroke lead over Robert Thompson after the third round of the Champions Tour qualifying tournament.
Morse had a 6-under 210 total at TPC Eagle Trace. Thompson shot a 69.
"I put myself back in a good position and I just have to play well tomorrow," Thompson said. "I played pretty well the first round, but didn't finish well yesterday when I bogeyed two of the last three holes. I'm pleased where I am now.

Daly shoots a 68 at Hong Kong Open
John Daly shot a 2-under 68 to be within four strokes off clubhouse leader Liang Wenchong of China at 6-under in early first-round play at the $2.5 million Hong Kong Open on Thursday.
Daly was four-under after 15 holes, but bogeys on the final two holes cost him a share of equal second in the jointly sanctioned European Tour and Asian Tour event.
"I'm not too disappointed, being a little rusty. I haven't played in a month. Two under par on the first round - it appears pretty good.

Sheehan shoots 4-under 67 for first-round lead
Australian Paul Sheehan shot a 4-under 67 on Thursday to take the lead after the first round of the Dunlop Phoenix tournament.
Sheehan birdied Nos. 7 and 8 at the par-71 Phoenix Country Club and added two more birdies on the back nine to take a one-stroke lead over a group of seven golfers including American Brandt Snedeker and Japan's Toru Suzuki.
South Africa's Ernie Els shot a 72 to finish in a tie for 34th place.

President George W. Bush celebrated Monday with American golfers who reclaimed the Ryder Cup for the U.S.
Bush held a private picture-taking session in the Oval Office with coach Paul Azinger and seven members of the 12-member 2008 U.S. Ryder Cup team, which ended an era of frustration in September with a resounding victory over Europe.
The Americans led from start to finish, winning golf's pre-eminent event for the first time since 1999 with half their squad made up of Ryder Cup rookies.

32 players earn European Tour card
Oskar Henningsson won the final stage of the European Tour's qualifying school on Tuesday as 32 players earned their tour cards for 2009.
The Swedish golfer finished with a 21-under 409 total in the six-day event, to edge Spain's Carlos del Moral and Australia's Wade Ormsby by four shots.
Of the original 900 golfers vying for their tour cards, 156 remained to tee off at the par-72 PGA Golf de Catalunya course last Thursday, with Henningsson picking up the ?18,595 ($23,568) first prize.
